Letter: Response to ‘Let’s keep this simple’
We’re all frustrated with our tax code, but the GOP bill is nothing new. We tried something similar in 1986. It didn’t take long for that “reform” to become corrupted into what we have today. The primary effect of this bill would be to reset the loop holes so the lobbyist will have to “re-buy” those favors from Congress.
It’s time to truly reform the tax code. The income tax was born in 1913 after ratification of the 16th Amendment. It was illegal prior to that. It’s time we repeal the 16th Amendment, and try something simpler.
There is a plan already before Congress. It’s commonly called the “Fair Tax” and it was developed by economists, not politicians. This plan replaces the income tax with a consumption tax. It currently has 75 co-sponsors in Congress. When Mike Pence was in Congress, he also co-sponsored the bill.
The Fair Tax: abolishes the IRS, lets you keep your entire paycheck, is revenue neutral, eliminates loop holes, ends the payroll tax, makes US companies competitive and much more.
If you really want to simplify the tax code, tell Congress to pass the Fair Tax.
